Sharp AL 1655CS laser copier scanner printer

OVERVIEW:  The Sharp AL-1655CS all-in-one offers the copying, scanning, and printing features of earlier models, plus Ethernet network connectivity and 2-sided printing of 2-sided originals.

PROS:
At 51 pounds, the all-in-one copier has a footprint 20.4” x 19.8”. The copier is a little large to put on a desk but will feel right at home on any credenza, and the second paper tray brings it at a height comfortable for someone standing next to it to manually make copies or scans.

Having built-in Ethernet network support and a hi-speed USB, the AL-1655CS is right at home either in the middle of an office floor or connected to a secretary’s computer. It gives an office with multiple computers to be able to utilize one machine for printing instead of having to buy a printer for every workstation.

Sharp has made some major improvements on the AL-1655’s control panel, making it even more useful than before. Now users have more programming preset control at the panel, plus the alpha-numeric display makes troubleshooting easier than with earlier models.

The AL-1655CS uses a stationary 8½” x 14” platen for scanning instead of a sliding platform to keep its footprint no bigger than its physical size.  The automatic document feeder allows for 30 double-sided copies to be made up to legal-size: more originals can be fed in as the level lowers. By scanning the original once and storing the image into its 10MB memory allows the AL-1655CS to produce copies at the rate of 16 pages per minute, up to 99 copies.

Unlike earlier models, the auto-doc feeder of the AL-1655CS can automatically scan 2-sided originals and create 2-sided copies. When you think of all the times you had 20 pages of 2-sided originals and the hoops you had to jump when a copier could only read one side, this feature alone makes this worth buying.

Another nice feature the AL-1655CS has (if you use the automatic document feeder) is the ability to physically shift the position of each set of copies in the output tray for easy collating and stapling. This is achieved by pressing the Electronic Sort (or E-Sort) button on the control panel. The multi-page original is scanned first into the 10MB memory, then copied in order. This offset sorting feature is rarely found on other desktop copiers or all-in-ones.

The AL-1655CS has three different exposure modes & resolutions (auto, manual, photo). Automatic (or default) resolution is 600 x 300 dpi. “Photo quality” is 600 x 600 dpi at 256 grayscale levels. The magnification can be changed from 25% to 400% in 1% increments or in 8 jumps.

This Sharp has two sliding paper trays, each holding up to 250 sheets of either letter (8½” x 11”) or legal (8½” x 14”) size paper. The two-tray feature is especially nice in an realty or legal office where legal and standard size papers are often used. Non-standard sizes from 3” x 5” up to 8½” x 14” can be placed singly on the scanning platform, or up to 50 sheets placed on the multi-purpose flip-tray on the side of the copier.

CONS:
During its prime, a 16 ppm copy speed was impressive for a small copier. In truth, the touted 16 ppm speed can only be achieved at lowest resolution, but that’s the caveat for any printer specs. Don’t expect the faster print speeds of 20 ppm or more that’s typical of current monochrome laser printers.

As this was one of Sharp’s first attempts at network copiers, it runs on the slower 10BaseT and cannot be connected to a hub or switch that cannot auto-switch between the two speeds.

With all the improvements made with the AL-1655CS, it’s strange that Sharp reduced the resolution for the scanning down to 600 x 600 dpi. Older CS models, while having the usual 600 x 600 for printing and copying, could at least color scan images up to 600 x 1,200 dpi.

Sharp’s does not offer PCL or PostScript print emulation. Instead, Sharp provides their own SPLC print emulator. For most printing users won’t notice any difference in performance, and considering the low resolutions of this all-in-one, it’s unlikely any high-end Adobe graphics will be going to this unit anyway.

INK / TONER NEEDS:
Starter toner cartridge that comes with the AL-1655CS will last for only 2,000 sheets, so it’s a good idea to place an order for more toner when you get the all-in-one.

The AL-1655CS has separate toner and drum to help reduce overall consumables costs. Sharp offers a choice for toner: the standard-size toner (4,000 pages at 5%), or the High-yield (6,000 pages) unit. The drum unit will need to be replaced ever 18, 000 pages or every 3rd toner replacement.

During the course of changing toner, people often forget to keep track when it’s time to change the drum.  Combo-packages are available that offer the drum with several toners. By the time the toners are consumed, the remaining drum is replaced. These combo-packages make maintenance easy and increases overall longevity and print quality.

SOFTWARE:
Included is Sharp’s desktop document management software. The software does a decent job in giving you control of the unit’s various printing and scanning functions.

Okidata C5650n

When you think of a laser printer, it is almost always in an office or large company space somewhere. Like most technology, once it has been around a while, the prices become more reasonable and it moves into the reach of ordinary people. The ease of use, good quality prints and decent toner prices combine to make this an worthy proposition for home users who like printing as the usual small business audience.

With a rated duty cycle of 60000 pages a month, it is perfectly adequate for the large workgroup, except it lacks scalability. Other models in the Oki range are better suited to those, like the C6100 or C6200 where more paper capacity can be added as needed. The standard paper capacity with the C5650n is 400 sheets. The drawer holds 300 and the multi-purpose tray a further 100.

The processor is a fast 200Mhz and the memory is 64Mb as standard, which is upgradeable to 320Mb for larger print jobs. There is also the option to upgrade to an automatic duplexer if you need to print double-sided.

Connection is by USB, ethernet or parallel. If you want to network it then you just need to add it to a workgroup router and let it be auto detected. Once the group sees it you can push the drivers to them and it’s ready to go straight away.

It won’t take the C5650n too long to print either, with a rated print speed of 26 pages per minute for mono and 22 for color. The print quality is great when printing text. The 1200 x 600 dpi resolution means that the print is clear and all the edges crisp. Printing graphics or images is where no laser printer is at its best, but this holds its own well with no obvious artifacts or bleeding on our test document.

The printer is easy to install, configure and manage. The starter cartridge is good for 1000 pages, and when it comes time to change, simply lift the lid and pull them out. They are laid out horizontally which makes replacing them much easier than some. Replacement cartridges are good for another 5000 pages, for black and color, which drops the cost per page significantly compared to other devices.

With its ease of use, simple but effective controls and good build quality, the Oki C5650n is a great buy for users who want laser printing at a reasonable cost.

Kyocera Mita KM 1810

Kyocera has a reputation to uphold in the office equipment market. The Kyocera Mita KM-1810 does the brand proud and continues the tradition of offering good quality machinery at reasonable prices. The KM-1810 is a printer and copier who offers every feature you could ever need.

The mainstay of the KM-1810 is print quality. A printer/copier can have all the features you could imagine, but if it isn’t up to scratch in the reproduction department you may as well not bother. It is of a high standard with text and images both appearing clear and sharp, even down to fine details. It didn’t have problems with image heavy documents like some machines either. It seemed to cope perfectly well with whatever we threw at it. Copying is the same speed and quality as they use the same engine. The copier also has resize and document manipulation options too.

The test document we use in all our reviews is a 24 page PDF containing text at all different points, charts, graphs, images and photographs. It puts a device through its paces and really shows us what it’s made of.

With a print and copy speed of around 18 copies per minute for a typical document, the KM-1810 isn’t the fastest machine in the world, but in return you get a reliable, durable device that won’t let you down. The 250 sheet paper drawer, with the option for a further 250 will keep things moving smoothly. There is also a bypass tray of 50 sheets and an automatic document feeder which can handle another 30.

Toner is good value with high yield cartridges are to print around 7000 sheets. The drum is guaranteed by Kyocera for at least 100000 sheets, or three years as part of the standard warranty. This is an excellent value-add feature of the device. The downside is that once that period is up, any changes or servicing of the drum has to be done by an approved engineer, not by yourself.

This is a great printer and copier device for businesses who value quality over speed. With the Kyocera guarantee and reputation for longevity and reliability, the KM-1810 is a great purchase for the smaller office.

Gestetner 2712

The Gestetner 2712 grayscale copier is a multifunction office workhorse. Whilst not suitable for home use (unless you have a roomy home office and high printing needs) this copier is great for a busy office requiring the combined functions of a printer, scanner fax and copier.

With a resolution of up to 600 x 600dpi this great unit can provide clear and crisp copying and printing results with a very fine grayscale capability which leaves no banding, bleeding or blurring of images, texts, graphs or copies photographs. The copy ratio supported by the Gestetner 2712 is a reduction ability of up to 25% and an enlargement capability of up to 400%. This is standard of most copiers in the market of comparable make and economy.

The warm up time for the Gestetner 2712 is an impressive 15 seconds, so there is no need to wait around in the morning for the first print to come through. Once the machine is warmed up, then it gets going at up to twenty seven prints per minute in black and white and also grayscale. It has a maximum paper capacity of just over three thousand sheets, however this can be expanded with the optional automatic feeder. Through the multipurpose tray prints and copies can be made onto media such as transparencies, card paper, envelopes and labels.

On top of this, the Gestetner 2712 comes with duplex printing capabilities which means that gone are the days when you have to manually flip pages to get a print on both sides, which drastically cuts down time wastage, and will also be helping to cut printing costs and at the same time be more environmentally friendly.

Speaking of being kind on the environment, the Gestetner 2712 is also Energy Star compliant, so that you know its running usage is drastically lower than comparable machines without the Energy Star rating – this is another cost saving benefit of the Gestetner 2712.

The in-built fax is a standard facsimile facility, with a speed of three seconds per page transmission and a speed of up to 33.6kps. This printer is not really suitable for use on desktops as it weighs in at 165lbs! It will require its own corner in the office, however it is also not a monolith so can fit in almost anywhere with its 25 x 28 x 23 inch dimensions.

Overall this is a great machine for a busy office who require a reliable and cost efficient printer which is easy on toner usage and also on energy consumption.

Canon PC981

I bought the Canon PC981 because I run my own business and like to keep a copy of absolutely everything, just in case. I have digital copies of everything, because most of my business is done online, but it’s also nice to have a hard copy of everything. Computers are great but they aren’t infallible and they do break, however much you spend on them.

I have always bought Canon equipment for as long as I can remember because it has always been good quality and easy to use. I have an inkjet printer and a camera of theirs so I didn’t really worry about the quality of the copier.
The other reason I bought it was because of the instant-on function. My previous copier used to need at least 30 seconds to warm up, then another 10 or 20 to produce the first copy. The PC981 needs no warming up and will have the first copy ready within 10 seconds of my asking for it.

The Canon representative said it was something to do with their new toner. It didn’t need warming up like many of the others which meant the machine could just power up and copy away. That appealed to me because I’m not the most patient man on earth at the best of times. The less time I’m hanging around for stuff, the more money I can be making.

The PC981 has enough space for 500 sheets of paper, and another 30 in the document feeder on the side. There is also another 50 that can fit into the bypass tray. That and the fact that the cartridges will last for 4000 sheets before they need replacing means that it doesn’t need much looking after either.

Despite being small, quick and nicely priced there is no compromise on print quality with this machine. Every copy I make comes out the same. Precise, clean, straight lines, sharp edges and more than presentable. Even though I only use mine for filing, I would have no hesitation in using it for marketing or something.

The PC981 is ideal if you only copy a bit and don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a machine you will hardly use. While not the cheapest on the market, it is certainly the most cost effective. Running costs are minimal, maintenance is minimal but the productivity is certainly not.

Brother Fax 770

I’m a document specialist so I need a good quality copier and fax machine. I had no idea which one would be the best choice, so I ended up doing a little research online and plumped for the Brother Fax-770.

The machine has clear buttons which are well labeled, easy to understand and well laid out. I’m not really machine friendly, but this has been an exception as I had no difficulties in getting it to do what I want.

The 770 can broadcast fax up to a total of 47 locations, and because it has thermal line printing technology this enables it to offer great printing quality and no messy print outs (unlike my old fax). It’s able to produce 99 copies at a time, which is way above my needs, but it’s nice to know that if I had to I could.

The Brother fax 770 is a great choice for people looking for a copier and fax in one, and it is a really reliable machine for home use, as well as the home or small office user. It also has great remote capabilities, which enables me to re-route faxes that come through to any nearby fax machine if I am working away from home. It can also be connected to the answering machine, which is a great feature, as whenever I am away I connect it with the answering machine. That way, if there’s a call, the answering machine picks it up and if it’s a fax it forwards it to the fax machine. It can even resend a fax to wherever I am if I need it urgently.

At first glance replacement cartridges are a little expensive, but the fact that they seldom require a change makes it okay again. In reality I think it works out as a pretty economical machine. Other pluses of this fax and copier include its size – which is compact enough to fit on the most cluttered of desks. F or home use it is really a great machine to have. The Brother Fax 770 is a really good choice for those looking for a small, economical and thoroughly reliable unit.

The Pros And Cons Of HP Laserjet 2840

Overview
HP Laserjet 2840 was designed in 2007 and it was one of the first color laser printers that could be found on the market, at that moment, at a price fewer than 1000 dollars. The number made of three digits for a color laser printer was definitely what people wanted to see at that time. However, it could not compete with today’s models which are faster and better built.

Pros
HP Laserjet 2840 can hold multimedia cards, which is really good. It means that every person who wants to print something from a media card is able to do it by simply plugging the media card into the printing device.
It can be fax, printer and copier in the same time. Because it is very easy to configure and use, even a beginner will not face any type of troubles. The control panel is made of alphanumeric keypad and LCD screen. Also, there is something that can help the ones who want to use the fax function with a lot of ease. It comes with 5 fast dialing buttons.
It was one of the first laser color printers available on the market under 1000 dollars. In fact, at that moment, there were only two printing devices that were color lasers: HP Laserjet 2840 and Canon image class MF8170c. However, the Canon equivalent was not as good as the HP Laserjet 2840. The HP model was better than the Canon. Nowadays, they cannot measure up to any type of color laser printer, but they are still capable of producing good printings, even though the printing speed is sluggish.

Cons
As I said, the printing speed is very low. It can be acceptable while printing in black and white (20 pages per minute) but in color printing it is sluggish. It is able to print only with a speed of 4 pages per minute. However, this low printing speed is generated only by the ridiculous old printing technology. At that time, every page needed to go four times through the printer, until it came out. The reason why it happened like this is that the old technology used multiple pass color printing.
Another disadvantage of HP Laserjet 2840 is that it is too noisy. When it works, it sounds more like a car than like a color laser printing device.
The reason why it is so loud is that the old technology printing process was so ineffective.

Brother HL 5340D

Finding an affordable printer is not easy these days, especially if one is looking for a great product. For anyone facing this problem the Brother HL-5340D might be just up your street. The combination of price, running costs and reliability combine to make this a decent prospect when you need your next printer.

It offers an average speed of 32 pages per minute for text documents. I decided to test this, and even when using a stopwatch to ascertain the truth of this claim, had to grudgingly accept it. Decent spped and good quality monochrome printing makes it ideal for small business and home users like me.

The duplex printing mode makes it easier to print double-sided documents. It can actually cut the time in half for those like me, who produce mostly double sided prints. Monochrome flyers and leaflets are still popular, thankfully, and I produce thousands of them, which is why I needed a reliable printer.

The Brother HL-5340D offers a standard paper capacity of 300 sheets with 50-sheet multipurpose tray for envelopes and letterheads. It is a decent capacity for the average user and there should be hardly any need to replace the papers on an average working day in a small office or home office environment. Although, when the time comes, filling the paper tray is extremely simple. The Brother HL-5340D offers an optional 800-sheet tray but someone my size would find this an unnecessary add-on, with the standard 300 sheets being plenty enough. While the standard toner is more than adequate in economy and efficiency, there is also a high-yield 8,000-page toner offered for that extra value for money.

The actual performance of Brother HL-5340D is pretty good. Most users will be able to use the ‘plug and play’ mode without any complicated setup. Even when fully installing, the driver CD takes care of it for you. Even where there are times of high demand or deadlines, printing dozens of pages a minute and loading new jobs constantly, the HL – 5340 is able to keep up.

The Brother HL-5340D performs well under strenuous working conditions and there are hardly any issues with cooling, overheating or slow response. Overall this is a workhorse printer that can work all day and night without needing any TLC at all. My kind of printer.

Canon Copier ImageClass MF6530

I bought the Canon Copier ImageClass MF6530 to replace a Copystar that had unfortunately ended its useful life. The Copystar served me faithfully for many years until the engine died and it wouldn’t even wake up.

I chose the MF6530 because I trust the Canon name and it offered just about everything I needed from a device. The main reason was the almost instant response when I wanted to use it. It uses the same lower power technology that most electronics do now, with a low power ‘standby’ mode. Canon RAPID toner enables it to warm up almost instantly, certainly within a couple of seconds and is ready for use.

It processes my work at a rate of 23 pages per minute, whatever type of printing or copying I need doing. My stuff is mainly text but there are occasions when I print images or graphs, and the MF6530 doesn’t even blink. The built-in duplexer enables it to print double sided, which is handy for when I print leaflets or handouts. The automatic document feeder also means I can dump a load of copying into it and leave it to it. This simple, effective operation is what I paid for. I don’t want to have to stand over a machine and hand feed it paper, or make sure it’s working properly.

Apart from the quick response, the print quality is also something that made me choose this model over the competition. As I said, I often print leaflets and some of them can be quite image intensive. The MF6530 takes them all in its stride and produces a great quality print or copy. The grayscale makes them almost look colored, and are definitely accurate to the original when making copies. There is no visible banding or artifacts when I do mine at least. All prints look good enough to share with clients and staff alike.

The MF6530 comes with a scanner and fax too, but I don’t use them much. I tested them both when I first got the machine and they worked like a charm. The scanner copies in color and can do so across the USB to my computer. The fax is a G3, which is the fastest out there and sent a test sheet in a little under 3 seconds.

I like my MF6530, it does what I want it to do without any fuss or problems.

Konica Minolta MagiColor 5440DL

The Konica Minolta MagiColor 5440DL is a real advance from its predecessor, the 5430DL. While slightly larger it is for those who really do have to print in color.

The 5440DL is relatively quick for a lower end laser, and comes with a duplexer for double sided printing. Color prints appear at a rate of 4 pages per minute and monochrome pages at 15.

Setting up is easy, merely insert the cartridges, connect it, install the drivers then plug it in. Just like the 5430DL, this printer needs a host computer in order for it to work properly. The computer does all the work, processing the images and sending instruction to the printer, rather than the printer having its own processor and doing it itself. This means that the computer will always need to be on and connected to use the printer.

The standard paper tray can now hold 500 sheets, and there is also a multipurpose tray which is good for another 100. A pair of optional 500 sheet trays are also available if you need more. The built in 64Mb memory is plenty enough for most uses, but is also expandable to 576Mb for busier offices.

Performance is good, with that average print speed of 15 pages per minute for monochrome and 4 for color. Warm up time entailed a little wait of 54 seconds, but that isn’t unusual for a color laser printer. Print resolution is a standard 600 dpi, with text and image printing both offering good quality output. Text especially was well done with detailed and straight edges all the way down to 3pt. Diagrams and images were also well produced and colors were even and accurate, which is ideal for office use.

If you’re considering buying a color laser printer but are worried about the cost of running one, the 5440DL is well worth a look. It offers a reasonable purchase price, good quality backup from Konica and cheap consumables. With a per page cost of around 1.6 cents for a mono page, and 10.1 for color, it doesn’t cost too much to run. All of which should be an appealing prospect to any small or home office that is in the market for a new color printer.

Brother MFC 8860DN

If you need a monochrome laser printer for your small business, you can’t go far wrong with the Brother MFC-8860DN. It is another solid performer from the office equipment specialists at Brother. The MFC-8860DN is stuffed full of options that will satisfy even the most demanding office environments. A good quality mono printer, a copier, scanner and fax are all incorporated into a reasonably sized machine.

The printer runs at around 30 pages per minute at 1200 dpi. The results are great, producing prints of clarity and depth that is surprising for such a price point. The copier runs just as fast, producing accurate and credible copies at 30 pages per minute also. Images are reproduced faithfully with only minor graining on the grayscale. Edges are sharp with no jaggedness seen on other printers of this ilk.

Physically the automatic document feeder sits on top, and the wings overlap the chassis by a few inches. This is so the MFC-8860DN can incorporate a full sized scanner and copier, capable of processing full legal-sized copies or scans. The scanner itself produces good quality scans, to either paper or file. Integrated LDAP protocol allows scans to be sent using address book features on a network which is an interesting feature.

There is the standard 250 page paper drawer, which is expandable to 500 if you purchase the extra. Toner cartridges are easy to reach and to swap out. And paper is easy to load and recover. Jams were suspiciously infrequent, even when using the automatic document feeder, which is something well worth the purchase price all on its own.

The control panel is clean and clear, the LCD screen bright and easy to read. There are three buttons, one for each of scan, copy and fax, which makes the menu system simple and easy to navigate. This method avoids a lot of the convoluted menu systems that we have to fight through daily.

Installation is simple, with USB, parallel and Ethernet connections. Driver installation is quick and to the point, offering enough features to satisfy the busiest users. The scanner isn’t over endowed with tools, but the basic functions are enough for most uses.

Being capable of sharp, accurate prints, copies and scans, the MFC-8860DN is a sensible choice for the small business. It has enough features to keep the office working and enough areas of expandability to scale with the growth of it too.

Brother MFC 7840W

The Brother MFC-7840W is an attractive prospect for the small or home office, with a good all-round set of features. Priced to compete in that SOHO market it does perform well, and is worth the investment.

While there are many color laser multifunction devices on the market, they don’t come as cheaply as this monochrome MFC-7840W. Not everybody needs to print color, so this is an excellent alternative for those people. It is capable of printing, scanning, copying and faxing, and does them all with ease.

There are three ways of connecting the device, USB, Ethernet and WiFi, which is a good set of choices. The USB option is the easiest to set up, but offers slower transfer speeds than Ethernet or 802.11g. Networking the printer was easy, with it appearing in our workgroup as soon as we had connected it and switched it on.

The control panel is well designed and simple in operation. There are three large buttons that allows you to choose between copy, scan and fax and the bright LCD clearly shows you what you’re doing.

Output is good, with prints coming out at 22 pages per minute for monochrome at up to 2400 x 600dpi. The text was clear on all tests with clean edges and no bleeding. Grayscale was even and well distributed and reproduction was good overall. Scans were of a good quality, but the software leaves a little to be desired. The package is basic to say the least but you can get by.

Paper is held in a 250 sheet capacity drawer at the front. Toner can be changed quickly and efficiently with only a clip to remove. Replacement cartridges can produce 2600 pages, and replacement drums will last for 120000. While not the longest lasting consumables on the market, their relatively short life is reflected in the price. Retailers like quikshiptoner.com sells cartridges for $36 at the moment which is good value.

The fax is a standard affair, offering good quality matched with decent speed. The controls are simple and the control panel has the usual phone book, redial, resize and other options for normal use. Transmission was decently quick and print quality on received faxes was good.

For small businesses or workgroups who need a multifunction device for convenience rather than necessity will do well to consider the MFC-7840W. It has enough features, and produces documents of a quality suitable for almost any office environment. The consumables are available and affordable enough to make the cost of ownership low enough to be attractive to many buyers.

Brother Intellifax 2920

Purchasing the Brother Intellifax 2920 was the choice I made for meeting my particular needs. Being the owner of a small home-based business I was looking for a fax machine that possessed the usual features and provides fast, quality results. Sometimes things get a bit hectic and I need something that works quickly with the minimum of fuss. The Brother Intellifax 2920 turned out to be what I was looking for.

The super G3 fax machine was easily homed in my small office space. Its compact design and front loading paper cassette tray helped me fulfill my work quotas, while not taking up too much space, or being too intrusive.

The 20 touch dial locations in the Brother Intellifax 2920 allowed me to contact most used numbers and regular customers easily, quickly and efficiently. I’m able to communicate with my clients more often and more quickly which helped me in reducing their complaints by responding to their requests immediately.

The efficient Brother Intellifax 2920 has the aforementioned front loading 250 sheet paper tray and a 30 page auto document feeder. You can easily store up to 500 pages in the fax memory for out of paper transmission and this fax also features 16 MB memory with dual access. The easy to use and convenient access also allows you to replace the toner and drums when required.

All Brother fax 2920 machines work using separate toner and drum which can be changed without drama. The Brother Intellifax 2920 machine is perfect for my needs and allows me to use the same ink cartridges for my laser printer as well. This multifunctional fax machine is able to send and receive a large number of faxes and also allows me to scan while the faxes are coming in and going out. It has all the features that an expensive fax machine would posses: from providing quality and quick results to easy and intuitive to set up.

This is a solid performing machine. As you may have gathered, things get a little frenetic at times, and this baby helps me out a lot. All I can say is the Brother Intellifax 2920 has helped me in sending and receiving high volumes of faxes and provides quality results every time.

Brother HL 4040CN

I am a freelance writer and editor and often have to print in large quantities. I bought the Brother HL-4040CN and found it to be ideal for my workload. Previously I was using a printer that was almost eight years old and extremely toner hungry, noisy and inefficient. A friend told me about the Brother HL-4040CN and I ended up buying one, despite plenty of research into competitors.

The main reason for buying Brother HL-4040CN is that it’s a color laser. I was tired of using black and white printers, and there was some work that needed an elaborate colored printing. Clients often want proofs with colored marking, which a monochrome printer just can’t handle. While my color needs were modest, I couldn’t do without it. I therefore opted for the Brother.

It’s also quick, offering an output of 21 pages per minute and has monochrome printing capability as well as full color. I am using the included Ethernet interface connectivity and it’s working fine for me. Paper capacity is around 300 sheets and there is high capacity replacement of toner cartridges.

The USB Direct Interface on Brother HL-4040CN provides PictBridge support. This means that I can connect my PictBridge-compliant camera to the printer and then print pictures directly from the camera. There’s simply no need of first downloading them on a PC. This is handy if I just want to print a picture or two rather than having to boot the whole computer.

I was concerned about the setup part as I am not well-known for my technical prowess. It was, however, quite an experience for me, being able to set it up within 10 minutes. The instructions definitely helped me out there as they were clear, descriptive and actually in English.

The control panel of the HL-4040CN is one-touch operation and enables me to complete all printing jobs with the minimum of fuss. I like things to be simple to use, and this certainly qualifies. An LCD display makes it easier to check the status of print jobs and the menu selection helps me in starting the process.

The replacement of toner cartridges and cleaning isn’t a difficult job as it is done through a front loading flap. I have become a fan of the Brother HL-4040CN because of it easy-to-use working and excellent printing results. While I’m no technophile, it does seem exceedingly easy to use, straightforward and does exactly what it says on the box.

HP LaserJet 4050

The HP LaserJet 4050 is part of a lineup of decent quality laser printers that make up Hewlett Packards monochrome printer stable. They are designed to compete directly with similar offerings from Dell, Xerox and Brother, who are the other big names in the office equipment space.

Its a decent size cube in the usual light gray color. It has a solid feel to it which is both utilitarian and reassuring at the same time. Built to last, and built to work, with a 65,000 page duty cycle the 4050 could quite accurately be called a workhorse. It has a 500 sheet paper drawer with a further 100 with the flip down multipurpose feed behind a flap at the front. Output is via a 50 sheet flip down tray at the rear and a 150 sheet output tray on top.

Toner and management are under a flap at the top. The cartridges unclip and you can see the entire paper path from the paper tray upwards. Through the clever use of levers you can get finger access to all of it, which makes coping with jams pretty simple. Not that we had any to try out.

Copy quality is what makes or breaks a printer, whoever the manufacturer might be. Luckily the reproduction is faultless. Our test completed without any issues at all, even the images. Text is clear and black, as it should be. Larger points had straight lines, definite corners and even toner spread. Graphs and images were also definitively defined, well filled and even throughout. Photographs were detailed, with only a little bobbling on darker areas, but definitely good enough for business use. At a speed of 17 pages per minute, its no slouch either. The 4050 wont keep you waiting.

The base 4050 can be connected by USB, but the bigger brother the 4050n is a network ready device. Both are almost identical apart from this network facility. USB is fine as long as it has a host PC to run from, but a networked printer is infinitely more flexible.

The HP LaserJet 4050 is like a solid, dependable truck. Nothing fancy, nothing flash, but works well and wont let you down.

Dell 1720

The Dell 1720 monochrome laser printer sits right in the middle of a whole raft of printers that Dell have released over the past few years. It is aimed at the small or home business but offers a couple of features normally seen on devices much more expensive than this.

The build continues the boxy black and grey theme that Dell has adopted for their office equipment line. It is a no-nonsense, functional design that allow it to fit into smaller spaces than most others on the market. This is ideal if you’re short of space in a home office. The quiet operation is also a bonus if using this at home too.

The printer has a 250 sheet tray as standard, but can be expanded to support a further 300. There is also a manual feed tray at the top with a manually adjusted paper guide.

The 1720 comes in two variants. The Dell 1720 and the Dell 1720dn. The dn offers native Ethernet support with a built-in port, and a duplexer for double sided printing. Both models has a decent 366Mhz processor and 32Mb of memory which can be upgraded to 160Mb. Both are connectable via USB and parallel port, while the 1720dn has an optional wireless adapter for true freedom.

The control panel is just a matter of six LEDs, no screen, which indicates low toner, drum and the usual printer type warnings. Changing the toner is simply a matter of folding down a front opening and removing it. Replacement is the reverse. The package contains a start toner which will be good for around 2000 prints, after that the new ones should last around 6000 for an average 5% covering business document.

At an estimated 28 pages per minute according to Dell, the 1720 is no slouch. The print quality is very good, with the ink being spread evenly over large images and text, while being fine and sharp on even the smallest text. Printing grayscale documents also yielded good results, with coverage even across the whole image, with a good range of shades when printing images.

Overall this is a great little printer for the small office. It is easy enough that it can be used by all skill levels, but fully featured enough that it should cope with just about everything you would need. Consumables are readily available at places like Quikshiptoner.com, despite Dell attempting to tie you in with the Use and Return Service. A good printer for the money.

Dell 3110cn Laser Color Printer Review

Overview:
Another great thing about the global technological progress is its parallel process of lowering prices. High quality technological products are becoming cheaper and cheaper and therefore affordable to everybody and are no more reserved only for the richest. Dell 3110cn laser color printer is one such product.

With its possibilities of 600 x 600 dpi color printing, 17 ppm, or 31 ppm of deep black printing and the built in Ethernet port, Dell 3110cn laser color printer will make a very useful office tool, at a really reasonable price.

Pros
Dells robust 3110cn laser color printer has quite large dimensions (53 pounds of weight, 18.5 inches tall, 16 inches wide and 19.1 inches deep) which makes it even bigger than the rest of the similar performance models. But it is after all a color printer, and four toner cartridges however do take up some space.

The original Dell 3110cn laser color printer is a non-duplex model, with the input tray capacity of 250 sheets of paper and the 150-sheet multipurpose output tray. Types of paper that it can successfully handle is legal and the letter-sized paper. Original model however has a possibility of many add-ons, such as duplex, or a version suitable for a higher quality paper, for the color printing.

This convenient office device has a very good network connectivity features; it comes with the built in 10/100BaseT Ethernet and the USB and Parallel port, for the direct PC connection and network printing. The initial printer memory of 128MB that can be increased to impressive 1152MB is a real advantage which makes it extremely useful office printer.

Dell’s 3110cn model has great printing speed performances. The max printing resolution of this printer is 600 x 600 dots per inch, and it turns 31 pages of sharp and precise black and white prints per minute, at the same time saving the toner by using only black color. Color prints can be delivered in a quantity of 17 pages per minute, which is still middle to high class performance for this category of printers.

The Dell 3110 laser color printer’s control panel is basic, not very demanding to handle. Its LCD displays 16 x 2 character ‘keyboard’ with no unnecessary and confusing commands, which is a rare quality these days. Network settings can be operated remotely.

Cons:
This printer is a heavyweight model, and because it is designed mostly for home and small office use, its dimensions could be considered its disadvantage. It is however, inevitable, because of the amount of space that color printers need for the toner cartridge. In addition, the printer should be handled cautiously when opening the front panel, because its light sensitive parts are not protected enough. Some objections have been noticed on the complicated toner replacing procedure.

Dell C3670dn Printer Review

OVERVIEW

All the office printing jobs can be well done very fast, by choosing the Dell C3760dn. If you need to print a very high number of pages and in the same time you need quality printing, this printer is the best choice in its price range. You will not have to pay a very high amount of money on refill either. It is ideal for an office environment because Dell C3670dn is connected to the internet through Ethernet and it has USB ports for various special needs. Because of features like auto duplexing, the efficiency of printing was dramatically improved. Therefore, if you need a printer with low maintenance costs which is able to finish the entire job in time, Dell C3760dn is the perfect choice.

PROS

It can keep 550 sheets in the main tray, 150 sheets in the multi-purpose tray and 220 pages in the output one. However, if you think that you need more space for paper you can simply buy an additional 550 sheets tray.

You can simply place the printer on a table, because it weights around 60 pounds and its dimensions are 17” x 19” x 15. It is not recommended to be put on a desk, because the printer is too heavy.

The printing rate is 36 pages per minute and because of this fact you will be able to print a very high amount of pages in white & black and colour very fast. You can easily print from a USB device, thanks to the existence of some USB slots on the lateral side of the printer.

The energy consumption will be lower as well as the electricity bill and the carbon footprint, because of Eco-Toners and eco-saving programs like Sleep Mode.Replacing the black toner costs just 1.5 cents per page, which is very low.

The memory of Dell C3760dn is 256 MB, but you can add another 512 MB. You have just one year warranty, which is the standard, but you can increase it to 4 years. You shouldn’t exceed 80.000 pages per month if you want to avoid technical issues.

CONS

You will want to save your color toner, because you need to pay up to 5-7 cents per page when you replace it.

Even though printer’s performances on Windows are best, when you will hook the printer to a MAC platform, you will be able to print only 15 pages per minute. Dell’s C3670dn performance on MAC can’t be considered extraordinary.

HP 5000gn

Hewlett Packard are retiring the 4M and 4MV making way for the LaserJet 5000 series. The HP 5000gn is designed for workgroups looking for fast, accurate printing. Its top resolution is a true 1,200 x 1,200dpi and the basic model comes furnished with 4Mb of memory and a single 250-sheet paper tray. The 5000GN comes with an extra 500-sheet base unit, 12Mb of memory, a JetDirect print server card and a hard disk.

The multipurpose tray is capable of handling larger paper sizes and with 100 sheet capacity, brings the total paper handling to 850 sheets. If you need more, you could always can add another 250-sheet base tray, and if you need to print on both sides, a duplexer can be fitted between the standard paper tray and lower base unit. The toner can be accessed from the top and has a life of 10,000 sheets.

The HP 5000gn has a 100MHz RISC processor, Instant-On-Fuser and JetSend. This useful technology allows direct communication over a network and aims to negate the need for printer drivers. This would be a significant step forward if this technology becomes popular. HP have often had problems with their drivers, and this methodology could significantly improve a printers compatibility across a range of applications.

Print speed depends on paper size, the resolution selected and the content to be printed. The 5000GN offers three print modes, ProRes for maximum resolution, FastRes for interpolated 1,200 dpi and faster print speed, and a standard 600 dpi setting for everything else. FastRes and the standard setting managed 16 pages per minute, while ProRes produced 8 pages per minute.

Print quality was impressive. The standard 600 dpi is plenty good enough for text only printing, and gives the best print speed. ProRes improves graphics and photographic printing substantially, and we suggest using it whenever you’re printing images. The print is much more detailed, grayscale tones are more even and smooth and overall improved results over the other two modes.

The HP 5000gn is on par with the competition of its time, print speed is average, options are standard, but the print quality is anything but. If quality is the main consideration, this printer is a great choice. If it’s anything else prompting the purchase, I would check out the competition too, the 5000gn is a solid performer and one of a crowd at this price point.

OkiData C3530

The OkiData C3530 is aimed squarely at the small workgroup who needs good quality color printing with multifunction attributes. Oki, quite confidently say that the C3530 can outperform and print better than any other product in the market. That is quite a bold statement considering the competition from the likes of Panasonic, Xerox, Brother and Dell. They have all produced great quality machines over the past couple of years that definitely take some beating.

Despite being an awkward looking machine, the C3530 is a performance powerhouse for its price. It prints monochrome at a rate of 20 pages per minute and color at 16. The finish is excellent for both. Out test document consists of 24 pages of text, graphs images and white space in order to test the reproduction thoroughly. The printer handled it perfectly and deposited the finished document in a little over 1 and a half minutes at 600 dpi. Increasing it to the ProQ2400 resolution setting didn’t even give the C3530 pause. It only took a few extra seconds and the difference was clear.

Despite those quick print times, copying is considerably slower. It took a little over a minute for an eight page color document, meaning 7 pages per minute, and 45 seconds for a mono version. Copying quality was still good though, with colors and grayscales being accurate and relevant. Scanning and faxing were both useable and of a good quality. Much of the operation of the C3530 can be done either at the machine, or from a PC connected to it or the network. You can print, scan, copy and fax to a USB key, but not from it. You can also broadcast faxes to email, as well as copy and print to it.

Overall, the C3530 is a good piece of equipment. The quality of the prints and scans is possibly up to Oki’s claims of being the best in class. Our testing certainly didn’t detect any obvious shortfalls. As to whether it is or not we would have to test it longer term. The true test of course is whether it works for the users or not.

OkiData C5100n

Color printers used to be too expensive to have many of, and too slow to be efficient in an office. Not only were the printers themselves expensive, the toners used to be extortionate. Oki is part of the color laser revolution that changed all that, and with the OkiData C5100n, they continue bringing quality color laser printing to an office near you.

The advent of the single pass laser is what turned things around for laser printers. Once restricted to 5 or 6 pages a minute, they can now print as quick and sometimes faster than monochrome. The C5100n can output at a rate of 12 pages per minute in color and 20 monochrome, which is more than enough for a device of this size.

The prints are of a quality mainly seen in products more expensive than this one. Images are equally impressive, the C5100n outputs some great quality photographs with real richness to them. Color reproduction is clear and accurate while mono used good grayscale to simulate the shades.

Setting the C5100n up was as easy as unpacking it and connecting it up. Once powered the network was automatically configured and were up and running in minutes. It was just a matter of loading the drivers and we were ready to go. The paper drawer holds 300 sheets and the multipurpose feed tray another 100. That is upgradeable to 930 if you need it though if you purchase the optional paper drawer. The memory is also upgradeable, although it would be hard to imagine needing to do so. The built-in 32Mb is plenty enough for daily use.

Starter toners are included which are good for a thousand sheets each. So it’s just as well replacements are easy to acquire and reasonably priced. A new black toner will last for 5000 pages, as will the color ones. It’s actually quite unusual for color toner to last as long as black but Oki seems to be able to make color last a little longer than many of its competitors.

We would have no hesitation recommending the C5100n to any office. It is competent enough to handle even the most demanding print jobs and won’t let you down.

Kyocera Mita KM 1510

The Kyocera Mita KM-1510 is a monochrome copier that offers high quality copies no matter what they are. This machine is equally at home copying text documents or image heavy ones.

The KM-1510 offers solid dependability while producing good quality prints for as long as you need them. This device is ideal for the small business who wants a good value, long lasting printer. The Kyocera marketing blurb for this machine concentrates on solidity, reliability and dependability. All things that are valued highly in office machinery. There is nothing worse than having to wait for a repair technician to arrive when you have a load of copying to do.

Printing at 18 pages per minute at 600 dpi, the KM-1510 works quickly enough to suit most needs. It warms up in 30 seconds, will have a completed copy ready 10 seconds after pressing the button.

Despite being designed for the smaller business, the KM-1510 can cope with large print jobs thanks to the decent hardware and the concentration on quality and rugged construction. Nothing feels flimsy, everything feels solid and dependable, which is exactly what Kyocera was aiming for.

The 250 sheet paper drawer is partnered by a single sheet feeder and a 100 sheet output tray. There is also an optional paper tray to expand the paper capacity by a further 250 sheets.

Setup is quick and easy as Kyocera tends to sell their products with setup included. Their vendors will arrange delivery and installation for you, and will even move it around later for a fee. It can be connected via USB, or parallel port, although there is a network option. I still don’t know why manufacturers don’t include them as standard on devices of this caliber.

Toner is readily available and easy to replace one the front flap has been undone. New cartridges are reasonably priced with the high yield variants able to produce up to 7000 pages.

With the expansion potential of the extra paper drawer, networking and expandable memory, this is an ideal printer for the business who may grow. The KM-1510 can span many kind of business, from the SOHO, small to medium workgroups, and with a monthly duty cycle of 15000 pages per month, it won’t let you down.

Dell 1710

When you think laser printer, an office always springs to mind. Now prices are coming down, these types of printer are making their way into the home. Ease of use, good quality monochrome prints and low toner prices all combine to make this an attractive proposition to home users who print a lot as well as small businesses.

With a rated duty cycle of 15000 pages a month, it isn’t really adequate for the large workgroup or user base. It is ideal for the home user or home office though.

The build is typical Dell, the black and grey box with no frills or flimsy shelves. The output shelf is on top and the paper drawer at the front. The processor is a standard 366Mhz, and the memory is 16Mb standard, upgradeable to 144Mb for larger print jobs. This is plenty enough to cope with almost anything the target demographic could throw at it, including a college essay or university thesis. Connection is by USB or parallel. If you want to network it then you will need to buy the 1710n, which has an Ethernet and optional wireless connection.

Despite the relatively low duty cycle, this has one of the largest paper drawers in its class, with a maximum capacity of 800 sheets. It won’t take the 1710 too long to print those 800 sheets either, with a rated print speed of 27 pages per minute. The print quality is good when printing text. The 1200dpi resolution means that the reproduction is clear and edges crisp. Details are sharp and the print looks good overall. Printing graphics or images is where no laser printer is at its best, but the 1710 holds its own well with no obvious banding or bleed on an 8x10 photograph.

The Dell is easy to install, configure and manage. Paper is easy to feed, the drawer moves freely and toner can be changed with ease. While Dell offer their standard Use and Return deal on their toners, online retailers like Quikshiptoner.com seem a much better deal. The starter cartridge is good for 3000 pages, and when it comes to changing it, pressing a button on the site of the printer reveals the front panel which drops down to allow easy access. Replacement cartridges are good for another 6000 pages, which drops the cost per page significantly compared to other devices.

With its ease of use, simple but effective controls and good build quality, the Dell 1710 is a great buy for users who want laser printing at low cost. It does everything it promises to do.
