HP 5000gn

Hewlett Packard are retiring the 4M and 4MV making way for the LaserJet 5000 series. The HP 5000gn is designed for workgroups looking for fast, accurate printing. Its top resolution is a true 1,200 x 1,200dpi and the basic model comes furnished with 4Mb of memory and a single 250-sheet paper tray. The 5000GN comes with an extra 500-sheet base unit, 12Mb of memory, a JetDirect print server card and a hard disk.

The multipurpose tray is capable of handling larger paper sizes and with 100 sheet capacity, brings the total paper handling to 850 sheets. If you need more, you could always can add another 250-sheet base tray, and if you need to print on both sides, a duplexer can be fitted between the standard paper tray and lower base unit. The toner can be accessed from the top and has a life of 10,000 sheets.

The HP 5000gn has a 100MHz RISC processor, Instant-On-Fuser and JetSend. This useful technology allows direct communication over a network and aims to negate the need for printer drivers. This would be a significant step forward if this technology becomes popular. HP have often had problems with their drivers, and this methodology could significantly improve a printers compatibility across a range of applications.

Print speed depends on paper size, the resolution selected and the content to be printed. The 5000GN offers three print modes, ProRes for maximum resolution, FastRes for interpolated 1,200 dpi and faster print speed, and a standard 600 dpi setting for everything else. FastRes and the standard setting managed 16 pages per minute, while ProRes produced 8 pages per minute.

Print quality was impressive. The standard 600 dpi is plenty good enough for text only printing, and gives the best print speed. ProRes improves graphics and photographic printing substantially, and we suggest using it whenever you’re printing images. The print is much more detailed, grayscale tones are more even and smooth and overall improved results over the other two modes.

The HP 5000gn is on par with the competition of its time, print speed is average, options are standard, but the print quality is anything but. If quality is the main consideration, this printer is a great choice. If it’s anything else prompting the purchase, I would check out the competition too, the 5000gn is a solid performer and one of a crowd at this price point.
