Brother Fax 770

I’m a document specialist so I need a good quality copier and fax machine. I had no idea which one would be the best choice, so I ended up doing a little research online and plumped for the Brother Fax-770.

The machine has clear buttons which are well labeled, easy to understand and well laid out. I’m not really machine friendly, but this has been an exception as I had no difficulties in getting it to do what I want.

The 770 can broadcast fax up to a total of 47 locations, and because it has thermal line printing technology this enables it to offer great printing quality and no messy print outs (unlike my old fax). It’s able to produce 99 copies at a time, which is way above my needs, but it’s nice to know that if I had to I could.

At first glance replacement cartridges are a little expensive, but the fact that they seldom require a change makes it okay again. In reality I think it works out as a pretty economical machine. Other pluses of this fax and copier include its size – which is compact enough to fit on the most cluttered of desks. F or home use it is really a great machine to have. Finding an affordable printer is not easy these days, especially if one is looking for a great product. For anyone facing this problem the Brother HL-5340D might be just up your street. The combination of price, running costs and reliability combine to make this a decent prospect when you need your next printer.

It offers an average speed of 32 pages per minute for text documents. I decided to test this, and even when using a stopwatch to ascertain the truth of this claim, had to grudgingly accept it. The actual performance of Brother HL-5340D is pretty good. Most users will be able to use the ‘plug and play’ mode without any complicated setup. Even when fully installing, the driver CD takes care of it for you. Even where there are times of high demand or deadlines, printing dozens of pages a minute and loading new jobs constantly, the HL – 5340 is able to keep up.

The Brother HL-5340D performs well under strenuous working conditions and there are hardly any issues with cooling, overheating or slow response. Overall this is a workhorse printer that can work all day and night without needing any TLC at all. My kind of printer.

If you need a monochrome laser printer for your small business, you can’t go far wrong with the Brother MFC-8860DN. It is another solid performer from the office equipment specialists at Brother. The MFC-8860DN is stuffed full of options that will satisfy even the most demanding office environments. A good quality mono printer, a copier, scanner and fax are all incorporated into a reasonably sized machine.

The printer runs at around 30 pages per minute at 1200 dpi. The results are great, producing prints of clarity and depth that is surprising for such a price point. The copier runs just as fast, producing accurate and credible copies at 30 pages per minute also. Images are reproduced faithfully with only minor graining on the grayscale. Edges are sharp with no jaggedness seen on other printers of this ilk.

Physically the automatic document feeder sits on top, and the wings overlap the chassis by a few inches. This is so the MFC-8860DN can incorporate a full sized scanner and copier, capable of processing full legal-sized copies or scans. The scanner itself produces good quality scans, to either paper or file. Integrated LDAP protocol allows scans to be sent using address book features on a network which is an interesting feature.

There is the standard 250 page paper drawer, which is expandable to 500 if you purchase the extra. Toner cartridges are easy to reach and to swap out. And paper is easy to load and recover. Jams were suspiciously infrequent, even when using the automatic document feeder, which is something well worth the purchase price all on its own.

The control panel is clean and clear, the LCD screen bright and easy to read. There are three buttons, one for each of scan, copy and fax, which makes the menu system simple and easy to navigate. This method avoids a lot of the convoluted menu systems that we have to fight through daily.

Installation is simple, with USB, parallel and Ethernet connections. Driver installation is quick and to the point, offering enough features to satisfy the busiest users. The scanner isn’t over endowed with tools, but the basic functions are enough for most uses.

Being capable of sharp, accurate prints, copies and scans, the MFC-8860DN is a sensible choice for the small business. It has enough features to keep the office working and enough areas of expandability to scale with the growth of it too.

The Brother MFC-7840W is an attractive prospect for the small or home office, with a good all-round set of features. Priced to compete in that SOHO market it does perform well, and is worth the investment.

While there are many color laser multifunction devices on the market, they don’t come as cheaply as this monochrome MFC-7840W. Not everybody needs to print color, so this is an excellent alternative for those people. It is capable of printing, scanning, copying and faxing, and does them all with ease.

There are three ways of connecting the device, USB, Ethernet and WiFi, which is a good set of choices. The USB option is the easiest to set up, but offers slower transfer speeds than Ethernet or 802.11g. Networking the printer was easy, with it appearing in our workgroup as soon as we had connected it and switched it on.

The control panel is well designed and simple in operation. There are three large buttons that allows you to choose between copy, scan and fax and the bright LCD clearly shows you what you’re doing.

Output is good, with prints coming out at 22 pages per minute for monochrome at up to 2400 x 600dpi. The text was clear on all tests with clean edges and no bleeding. Grayscale was even and well distributed and reproduction was good overall. Scans were of a good quality, but the software leaves a little to be desired. The package is basic to say the least but you can get by.

Paper is held in a 250 sheet capacity drawer at the front. Toner can be changed quickly and efficiently with only a clip to remove. Replacement cartridges can produce 2600 pages, and replacement drums will last for 120000. While not the longest lasting consumables on the market, their relatively short life is reflected in the price. The fax is a standard affair, offering good quality matched with decent speed. The controls are simple and the control panel has the usual phone book, redial, resize and other options for normal use. Transmission was decently quick and print quality on received faxes was good.

It has enough features, and produces documents of a quality suitable for almost any office environment. I am a freelance writer and editor and often have to print in large quantities. I bought the Brother HL-4040CN and found it to be ideal for my workload. Previously I was using a printer that was almost eight years old and extremely toner hungry, noisy and inefficient. A friend told me about the Brother HL-4040CN and I ended up buying one, despite plenty of research into competitors.

The main reason for buying Brother HL-4040CN is that it’s a color laser. I was tired of using black and white printers, and there was some work that needed an elaborate colored printing. I was concerned about the setup part as I am not well-known for my technical prowess. It was, however, quite an experience for me, being able to set it up within 10 minutes. The instructions definitely helped me out there as they were clear, descriptive and actually in English.

The control panel of the HL-4040CN is one-touch operation and enables me to complete all printing jobs with the minimum of fuss. I like things to be simple to use, and this certainly qualifies. I have become a fan of the Brother HL-4040CN because of it easy-to-use working and excellent printing results. While I’m no technophile, it does seem exceedingly easy to use, straightforward and does exactly what it says on the box.

We all know the laser printer market is hot right now and competition is fierce. Multifunction devices really have to be good to stand out, and the features have to be spot on in order to sell. Out of the box the device is simple to install and configure. The toner cartridge fits into the imaging unit and then slides right in to a drawer on the front. Print quality is good, nice, crisp edges on text and decent image reproduction. At 21 pages per minute it isn’t lightning fast, but respectable enough. The scanner is okay, easy to use, and the lid can move up and down for thicker documents. This adds quite a bit of flexibility when copying or scanning as thick books or magazines are now easy to archive or duplicate.

Running costs are reasonable, with consumables being competitively priced.
A new toner cartridge is currently around $30 and will last a good 6500 pages, while a new drum is around $65 and will keep going up to around 20000 pages.

All in all, this is a product worthy of note and well placed in its target market. It has everything a multifunction device needs, and complete all tasks with ease.

The fax machine in the system is easy to operate and there is not a lot of hassle involved with faxing.

The Brother MFC-8890DW functions well over a network with both wireless and wired networking options available. The transfer rate is fairly swift over the network. The machine has the option of color scanning over the network, a feature not very common in multi-task printers. The paper storing capacity is up to 300 sheets, which is sufficient if you’re a small team using the machine, otherwise you may have to feed paper frequently. This is not an issue frankly, as a lot depends on the nature of work we have to do.

There is a fair amount of software installation that I had to do before the machine started functioning. This is a slight drawback for those who are not good with such things.
Otherwise, Brother MFC-8890DW is enough for all my printing, scanning, faxing and copying needs at the workplace as well as having the added bonus of being really efficient with toner usage, so it is not an expensive unit to keep.

Brother isn’t often the first name you think of when shopping for printers, but it is a big name in the small business market. The company has a few printers out there at the moment, and they are all good quality, reliable machines.

The MFC-9440CN is no different. It is a full color multifunction device that offers printing, copying, scanning and faxing, all from one convenient chassis. While not the smallest device in the world. It is stuffed full of features, and contains just about everything the small business needs.

The control panel is simple and straightforward, taking only a minute or two to orient yourself. The panel is divided up into functions which makes it easy to navigate, and prevents confusion when using more than one function. Printing and copying is of good quality. Reproduction during testing was accurate and sharp. Edge details were crisp with no bleeding, even on the largest text. Image reproduction was also good with no banding on black and white images, and accurate color reproduction on full color images.

Print speed is also good with a rating of 22 pages per minute for monochrome printing and copying and 17 pages per minute for color. The scanner is decent and can be used from in front of the machine or the desktop. The included software allows for decent editing before and after scanning and is an excellent addition to the suite.

Toners are easy to replace, and there is even an ecology mode to allow for savings wherever possible. The single pass technology that brother uses, not only permits the high page per minute rate, but also offers savings on toner use. Standard cartridges are good for 5000 sheets in black, and 4000 in color.

Connecting and configuring the MFC-9440CN is pretty straightforward. It can be connected via network or USB and is easy to set up. The drivers and user manual are complete and easy to use.

This is a solid device for the small business. It is fully featured enough to offer the flexibility that a business needs while the cost of ownership is low enough to make it an attractive proposition. The running costs are also attractively low, with toners costing less than competitors, and the ecology mode saving as much as possible during use.

The MFC-8840D is a fully featured multifunction device that offers nothing new to the genre, but is a good enough performer to warrant a review. It provides printing, scanning, copying and faxing as per all the other true multifunction devices out there, but it does something that most of its competitors don’t. It performs all functions well.

Often when purchasing a multifunction there is an inherent knowledge that there is a compromise somewhere. To get the benefits of four functions in one chassis, something has to give. An average scanner, basic functions or resolutions of high toner use are typical symptoms of this. But, with the MFC-8840D there are no compromises, the device does exactly what it promises.

The laser printer outputs mono at 21 pages per minute at a maximum resolution of 2400 x 600 dpi. It is fed by a 250 paper tray, which can be expanded to 500. There is also a single sheet multipurpose tray and an automatic document feeder on top. The MFC-8840D supports the usual printer languages, PCL 6 and BR-Script which is Brothers version of PostScript. This enables the device to work with any operating system with the correct drivers.

The fax can function as a standalone fax machine, or as a PC operated one. There is enough memory to record up to 600 faxes, which is also expandable for heavy users. The standard is 32Mb, but this can be stretched to 160Mb by purchasing a larger DIMM.

The scanner can use either the automatic document feeder, or the single sheet glass. It works on resolutions up to 600 x 2400 dpi and produced credible scans. Not many of us use them anymore, but having a decent scanner on hand can be a good thing sometimes.

Running costs are modest, the MFC-8840D has a power saving mode, toner saving mode and seems pretty efficient. Toner itself is reasonably priced, with a high yield cartridge having a 6500 age capacity and costing a little under $30. Replacement drums are just as cost effective at $65, and will last for 20000 pages.

For a small workgroup that has medium to low printing demands this is an ideal device. It’s cheap to buy, cheap to run and produces documents of a quality much higher than the cost.

Brother MFC 8480DN

There are more choices of multifunction devices than I ever thought possible now. A bewildering array of multifunction’s both color and monochrome to fulfill almost any need or business. The Brother MFC-8480DN has just complicated things further.

While not the prettiest of devices, the MFC-8480DN is all about function. The overlapping scanner and copier flatbed protrudes over the body a bit, but this is necessary to add the full features to a small chassis. The 250 sheet capacity paper drawer is solid and moves freely. There is also a 50 sheet multi-purpose tray on top and the option to add a second 250 page paper tray in the body.

Setup is just a matter of unpacking, connecting the cables and toner then installing drivers. Our test machine was up and running in no time. There are drivers for Windows, Mac and downloadable ones for most flavors of Linux. Once up and running the operation was smooth and quiet.

Performance was impressive too. Monochrome prints began appearing a mere 18 seconds after being switched on. Once warm, text prints came out at an impressive 32 pages per minute at the standard 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution. Reproduction was good, with strong bold colors and clean lines. Image production was also good with impressive grayscales and only a couple of gradient errors when studied close up. Nothing that would give a business user cause for concern though.

The automatic duplex printer is a great feature. Although it lacks the duplex automatic document feeder to compliment it, the performance is excellent and a great feature.

The consumables are easy to manage and replace. The cartridge is readily available online and are quite good value for money. A single high yield toner cartridge is good for 8000 pages and retails at only $35 at Quikshiptoner.com.

The MFC-8480DN is a solid, middle of the road performer, that will still be working quite happily long after many, more expensive printers have been retired. Ownership costs are low enough to be as attractive as the feature set, and the reproduction is of a quality to suit all business needs. The printer market, just got a little bit more complicated.

The Brother HL-4070CDW is another good, solid printer from the Brother range. This is also aimed squarely at the small or home office market, and delivers on all its promises.

This is a color laser printer that can output up to 20 pages per minute monochrome or color. Print quality is good in the default 600dpi resolution. Monochrome blacks and grays are clear and well formed. No bleed or jagged edges on large text or images. Color was much the same, with accurate reproduction and smooth clean lines throughout.

Paper is fed into a drawer on the front which can hold up to 250 pages. Toner cartridges are also fed from the front, and a convenient release button allows quick access. The black cartridge will print up to 5000 standard pages, with the color ones reaching 4000.

The LCD screen and controls are simple and easy to use. The screen changes color depending on the status of the machine, which is a good touch. It stays green when it’s ready to print, red when there is an error or problem, and orange when settings are being configured. The controls are a square directional affair with a Go and Cancel buttons to complement.

Setup is easy, with four connection options to choose from. Standard USB, parallel, Ethernet and WiFi. Configuration and driver installation is just as easy, with the software package installing in just over a minute. Wireless setup is probably the most straightforward you can get. You can either use the SecureEasySetup program or connect via Ethernet and configure it. The first method worked well and detected the network straight away.

Another useful feature is the USB port at the front, which enables you to print straight from a USB drive or digital camera. This saves a bit of time, not having to load them data onto a computer then print. The LCD screen allows you to choose the files you want to print and then prints them directly from the device.
