Dell 1720

The Dell 1720 monochrome laser printer sits right in the middle of a whole raft of printers that Dell have released over the past few years. It is aimed at the small or home business but offers a couple of features normally seen on devices much more expensive than this.

The build continues the boxy black and grey theme that Dell has adopted for their office equipment line. It is a no-nonsense, functional design that allow it to fit into smaller spaces than most others on the market. This is ideal if you’re short of space in a home office. The quiet operation is also a bonus if using this at home too.

The printer has a 250 sheet tray as standard, but can be expanded to support a further 300. There is also a manual feed tray at the top with a manually adjusted paper guide.

The 1720 comes in two variants. The Dell 1720 and the Dell 1720dn. The dn offers native Ethernet support with a built-in port, and a duplexer for double sided printing. Both models has a decent 366Mhz processor and 32Mb of memory which can be upgraded to 160Mb. Both are connectable via USB and parallel port, while the 1720dn has an optional wireless adapter for true freedom.

The control panel is just a matter of six LEDs, no screen, which indicates low toner, drum and the usual printer type warnings. Changing the toner is simply a matter of folding down a front opening and removing it. Replacement is the reverse. The package contains a start toner which will be good for around 2000 prints, after that the new ones should last around 6000 for an average 5% covering business document.

At an estimated 28 pages per minute according to Dell, the 1720 is no slouch. The print quality is very good, with the ink being spread evenly over large images and text, while being fine and sharp on even the smallest text. Printing grayscale documents also yielded good results, with coverage even across the whole image, with a good range of shades when printing images.

Overall this is a great little printer for the small office. It is easy enough that it can be used by all skill levels, but fully featured enough that it should cope with just about everything you would need. Ease of use, good quality monochrome prints and low toner prices all combine to make this an attractive proposition to home users who print a lot as well as small businesses.

It won’t take the 1710 too long to print those 800 sheets either, with a rated print speed of 27 pages per minute. The print quality is good when printing text. The 1200dpi resolution means that the reproduction is clear and edges crisp. Details are sharp and the print looks good overall. Printing graphics or images is where no laser printer is at its best, but the 1710 holds its own well with no obvious banding or bleed on an 8x10 photograph.

The Dell is easy to install, configure and manage. Paper is easy to feed, the drawer moves freely and toner can be changed with ease. While Dell offer their standard Use and Return deal on their toners, online retailers like Quikshiptoner.com seem a much better deal. The starter cartridge is good for 3000 pages, and when it comes to changing it, pressing a button on the site of the printer reveals the front panel which drops down to allow easy access. The Dell 1815DN is another printer is a series of releases from the computer giant of late. This device is a relatively inexpensive monochrome laser printer, with multifunction built in. It can duplex print, scan, copy and fax all from one modest chassis.

This is a printer that would suit a small business or home office with a small workgroup. It isn’t built like the 3115cn to serve larger organizations, but excels in its niche. Versatility is one of the mainstays of this machine. It can print good quality monochrome pages at up to 25 pages per minute at 600dpi, scan from USB stick, it supports Windows and Mac and the copying and faxing aren’t bad either. It can be networked or run from USB and cope with up to 25000 pages a month.

The 1815DN comes with a 300 sheet paper tray, with the option of increasing that to 550 with an extra tray purchase. Toner cartridges are easily replaceable after they have served their 5000 page life. They are reasonably priced too at an approximate cost of $57 each. This helps bring the cost per page down much lower than many of the other leading printer manufacturers.

The control panel is simple and straightforward with decent sized buttons and a clear LCD screen. The menu system is intuitive with forward and back buttons making commands easy to find.

Underneath the control panel is the paper output tray. Having it integrated into the chassis makes this a very convenient and compact printer. No side trays, or top trays to worry about here. It even has a little slideable shelf to ensure prints longer than legal sized won’t end up on the floor. A well thought out addition we thought. The only limitation with this output tray design is that it limits the prints to 150 sheets before it fills up. Seeing as the capacity is 300-550 sheets, this seems a little one sided.

The print, copy and scan qualities are excellent. Prints and scans are around 25 pages per minute according to Dell, with color at 18. Scans are an impressive 4 sheets a minute. Copy speed is one of the most impressive in its class, with monochrome copies coming out at 12 pages per minute.

The fax is an oft overlooked feature in a multifunction device. Sometimes it seems as though one was added only as an afterthought. On the 1815DN though, the fax is fully integrated and fully functioned. Faxes can be sent from or directed to specific email addresses, it fully supports secure transmission and it can be coupled with an answering machine and decide if an incoming call is voice or data. As well as the usual fax tools, these are useful to have.

The 1815DN is a solid performer. Ideal for the small or home business who wants a good quality multifunction printer at a decent price. Consumables are reasonable and the printer won’t cost a fortune to own.

Cons:

The Dell 3130cn is not the smallest printer out there and has been described by some users as being too bulky.  With dimensions (W x D x H) of 15.8 x 19.8 x 18.5 in and weighing in at a whopping 55.7 pounds, you may find this printer too large for your limited space and too heavy to move around frequently.  In addition to its size and weight, some users have mentioned that the 3130cn prints colors that are too dark, which might pose a problem for graphic designers or others who need extremely precise and accurate screen to paper color replication.   Another inconvenience is the fact that the Dell 3130cn does not come with wireless connectivity as a default. A wireless network adapter (IEEE 802.11b/g) is not included in the standard price of this printer, and must be purchased as an upgrade for an additional $99.99.  With wireless networking becoming the new standard in homes and offices, Dell really should throw this feature into its standard offering at no additional cost.

Dell is a name well known in the computer market.  It was no surprise when the company began diversifying into peripherals and consumables to support its mainstream offerings.

The Dell 3110cn is a big black box of a printer that hints at the power within.  It is a color laser printer that can service 60,000 copies per month, so it aimed squarely at businesses rather than home users.  It is a heavy duty printer, designed to handle everything the average office or workgroup can throw at it with ease.  The design is functional but reassuring, the black and silver making a nice statement next to the other, standard beige office equipment.

The print quality is good, even on fonts down to 3pt, at a standard resoltuion of 600dpi.  The monochrome reproduction is the real strength of the 3110cn.  While printing photographs isn’t a laser printers strength, the image quality is good enough for leaflets or brochures, with only a little dithering when translating full color pages. 

The hardware is specified to keep printing long after similar priced competitors have given up or broken down.  The 400Mhz processor and 128Mb memory is enough for even the most demanding workgroups, but the memory can be upgraded to 1Gb if necessary.  It can be connected via USB or via network as the n in 3110cn indicates.  An added feature is the opional wireless adapter that can be added to allow true wireless printing. 

The paper drawer is at the bottom fron of the machine and can handle up to 250 sheets.  There is also a 150 sheet multi-purpose drawer above it that can either be used for envelopes and other non standard materials, or in addition to the 250 sheet drawer to take it’s total capacity to 400.

Replacement toner are plentiful and most online retailers stock them.  The standard black toner can print approximately 5000 pages, and the color ones around 4000 before needing replacement.  At $99, the standard black is competitlvely priced and offers a lower cost per page than many other manufacturers on the market.

Overall, the Dell 3110cn is a solid performer. Ideally placed to fulfill the needs of the business or larger office.  It’s strong enough to cope with almost anything, and at a reasonable price point is an attractive proposition for most businesses.
